On January 27th, 1963, Fort Howard Council #5382 was instituted under the able guidance and assistance of District Deputy, Vic De Cleen, with many members taking all three degrees. On January 30th, our first official meeting as a council was held at the Brown County Arena. Clarence Peot, who had acted as chairman during the formation meetings of the council, opened the meeting and explained the proper order meetings. Robert O’Brien, Insurance Representative, then explained the Officers and their respective duties. Nominations and elections of officers followed and our council had its first Grand Knight: Worthy Grand Knight Earl Vande Walle.
A degree team was formed to initiate new members into the First Degree of our Order. The team was composed of the following members: Don Doney, Dale Mommaerts, Larry Solway, Clarence Leiter, George Ward & Al Doney.
The Council’s first newsletter was issued, informing our members that the new officers would be installed on February 13th at our temporary home, the Chappell Recreation Center. We also told that our membership consisted of 152 members (73 new members and 79 transferred members).
On February 13th, the new officers were installed by District Deputy, Vic De Cleene. Deputy Grand Knight Howard Ellis accepted the job as the Six-Point Chairman and introduced the following chairman: Catholic Activities: Larry Solway; Fraternal Activities: Herb Bomaleski; Council Activities: Bernard Young; Youth Activities: Pat Maloney; Public Relations: Linus Verber; Membership & Insurance Activities: Don Parins. On February 21st, another officers meeting has held to go over the proper methods of handling council business. Only two and one-half hours this time. On February 27th, the initiation fee was set at $15.00 for all members, with a dinner ticket to be included. Leo Ryan accepted the chairmanship of the Admissions Committee, and Larry Solway was appointed as Retreat Chairman. We were told the GK Earl Vande Walle was appointed as the teller for the State Convention in Sheboygan.
In March, our members attend a Holy Name Deanery Corporate Communion, held at the Arena on March 31st, in place of a council corporate communion mass. Pat Maloney and his group accepted the task of testing students under a Physical Fitness Program as requested by Fr. Kleiber at the following schools: St. Agnes, St. Joseph, St. John the Baptist, and Annunciation.
A resolution was passed that Fort Howard Council #5382 contribute ten cents per member to the “Know the Truth” TV program. Maurice Lawyer was appointed chairman on a nominating committee for new officers. He was assisted by Harold Heigl, Bill Schacht & Vince Platten. Charter Night was held on May 26th. Cost $6.00 per couple, Dinner and Dance. Music by Jerry Sobiek.
In April our First Degree Team held the honor of initiating eleven new members. It was their first real test and they were complimented on a job well done. The council was commended for their turnout at the wake service for Berrnard Mommaerts, our first member to pass away. A group of Honorary Pallbearers was formed and will offer their services at future funerals. Council held a social meeting for members and their wives for the showing of the 1961 & 1962 Packer – Giant Championship Games.
At our May officers meeting, it was discussed to have a Family Picnic instead of a meeting in July. Vic Hermann offered to be the chairman. Charter Night Banquet posters were passed out for placing in churches and stores. A vote of confidence was given to the four officers to represent us at the State Convention. On May 26th, we held our Charter Night Banquet and Dance. At the gala event, Virginia Skortz was presented with a $1,000 Scholarship, given by the State Council. A Program Booklet was given to all the ads by himself. State Deputy John Koch gave an inspiring talk after a very good meal.
During our August meeting, a report on forming a Squire Circle was given by Batt Cassano and District Deputy Ed Gagnon was introduced and he commended us on our six point program. Fr. Auer welcomed use to the St. Agnes Activities Building as our new meeting place.
