Life is always a balancing act; here is another excellent article explaining some of the Church teaching from Fathers For the Good:

There should be a sign over the storehouse of Catholic social teaching, reading “All Ye Who Enter: Tread Lightly.” As a native New Yorker, who grew up with the bustle of subway tunnels, I have a vivid image of both the power and the danger of the “third rail.”

There are many “third rails” in the Church’s social teaching that hold enormous power for healing societal ills as well as for causing much mischief when trod upon without due respect for tradition and complexity.

Faith J.H. McDonnell hits the nail on the head in her recent article “What Would Santa Do?”.  Ms. McDonnell is the director of the Religious Liberty Program at the Institute on Religion and Democracy in Washington, D.C. and author of several books including; Girl Soldier: A Story of Hope for Northern Uganda’s Children. Her article describes what the American Humanist Association (AHA) is doing to desensitize the true meaning of Christmas.

Her closing paragraph sums it up beautifully

Nicholas might well deal with the American Humanist Association in the same manner in which he dispatched poor Arius, but probably, being older and wiser, and “good, for goodness sake,” he would refrain from physical violence and just urge those who believe in God to assert their right to believe, and to flaunt their belief as publicly as AHA flaunts its unbelief.

Brian Caulfield Editor of Fathers for Good Blog is starting a new discussion how the Church’s teaching on social justice can guide our lives, here is a snippet of yesterdays post:

At the heart of the problem is a general doubt about the reality of truth – objective and universal truth. Pope Benedict XVI has referred often to the “dictatorship of relativism” that has poisoned not only religion but the life of nations and politics. If there is no truth that applies to all people of a nation, then politics, indeed, will descend to a power grab. Citizens and their elected officials no longer reach for what is good and true and beautiful; they simply contend over what is best for themselves, or for this or that group.

The battle will continue

Voters on Tuesday backed Proposition 8, which overturns a state Supreme Court ruling in May giving gays the right to marry, and opponents of the initiative wasted no time mounting legal challenges.

The following quote has provided inspiration for many in the pro-life cause:

“When the time comes, as it surely will, when we face that awesome moment, the final judgment, I’ve often thought, as Fulton Sheen wrote, that it is a terrible moment of loneliness. You have no advocates, you are there alone standing before God — and a terror will rip your soul like nothing you can imagine. But I really think that those in the pro-life movement will not be alone. I think there’ll be a chorus of voices that have never been heard in this world but are heard beautifully and clearly in the next world — and they will plead for everyone who has been in this movement. They will say to God, ‘Spare him, because he loved us!’”
