Very interesting post about California Proposition 8 to eliminate the right of same-sex marriage:

The post questions why is the California Teachers Union is donating so much money to try and defeat this proposal – quoting the blogger:

the single largest contributors to the No on 8 campaign is the California Teachers Union Issues Political Action Committee – $2 million.

I could certainly understand the CTUI PAC contributing to a school construction bond initiative, or a curriculum or testing initiative, or to defeat a voucher proposition – something that actually is related to education or to pay and benefits for their membership.

If that’s truly the case, then why is the teachers’ union spending a very large sum of its members’ dues on this issue?

The “No on 8” radio ads claim that this issue has nothing to do with public education. They quote the superintendent of public instruction claiming this initiative will have no effect on California’s public school curriculum.

More donations toward saving marriage!

Arizona’s Pro-Marriage Prop. 102 Campaign Showing Strong Momentum

By Jonquil Frankham

ARIZONA, October 23, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Recently the New Haven chapter of the Knights of Columbus donated $100,000 to yesformarriage.com, the group campaigning in support of Arizona’s Proposition 102 – the latest in a series of generous donations that have significantly bolstered the chances that marriage will be protected in the state come Nov. 4.

Proposition 102 is a motion to write the true definition of marriage into the state constitution. Same-sex “marriage” is already illegal under Arizona state law, but a constitutional amendment would prevent the possibility that it will be made legal at any point in the future. In particular, such an action would prevent activist judges from arbitrarily redefining marriage – as has happened in the three other states where same-sex “marriage” is currently legal.

Interesting article on  The Deacon’s Bench this morning -

“Kids have to pray hard but they play hard too,” Deacon Matthew DeForest said. “We have to meet them where they’re at.”

The Catholic youth rally is an annual event held by the Arlington Diocese, which covers all of Northern Virginia. Each year, the region’s Catholic teenagers gather to meet fellow Catholics and to re-energize their faith. The theme for this year’s rally was “Get Your Faith On.”

“The main purpose of this is to bring all the youth together at the beginning of the [school] year,” said Kevin Bohli, the head of youth ministry for the Arlington Diocese. “We want them to think of the church as more than just their parish.”

In addition to the rock music, the teens were treated to a motivational speaker, a performance from an improv comedy troupe and a seminar on appropriate dress called “Modest Is Hottest.”

DeForest is a 26-year-old deacon who gives his young parishioners fist bumps. He said that today’s teens are looking to the Catholic Church “to learn how to be a leader. … These kids are pumped to be involved in any way.”

.- Addressing the assembly of Catholic bishops from around the world at the Synod on the Bible, Mr. Carl Anderson, the head of the Knights of Columbus, called for a compendium to the Mass readings to be created to help improve Sunday preaching.

On Tuesday, Anderson began by noting that, for a number of years the Knights of Columbus has promoted praying with and meditating on the Scriptures, which is also known as Lectio Divina. This praying with the Scriptures has taken place within the context of “Marian devotion through the Rosary and Marian Hours of Prayer.”
