The Vice President for Communications for the Knights, Patrick Korten responded to an article which ran in the Washington Post.  Part of his response is provided below with a link to the original article, right or wrong, Supreme is donating a lot of money in support of California Pop 8.

The Knights of Columbus is not in any sense of the word “antigay” (“Mormons Boost Antigay Marriage Effort,” U.S. News, Sept. 20) and we strongly protest your use of the word in connection with our support of California’s Proposition 8. Marriage is not merely about love between two adults, it is about children — the product of that love — and a loving environment in which they can grow to adulthood.

We oppose same-sex marriage and favor humanity’s understanding, over thousands of years, of marriage as being between one man and one woman. We do so because it is, first and foremost, the optimal environment in which to conceive and raise children.

“Vote Pro-Life” radio ad begins airing nationwide today

Knights of Columbus spot features beating heart of 10 week old unborn child

New Haven, CT - September 23, 2008 -

A 30 second radio spot encouraging people to “vote pro-life” in the November elections begins running on radio stations around the United States today.  It will continue to air until the November 4 election.

The ad features the sound of an unborn baby’s heartbeat at 10 weeks, and the voice of a woman saying, “Listening to this makes me wonder – why would anyone question that her life has begun?”  It concludes with the words, “Vote your heart. Vote Pro Life.”

“The fact that the child whose heartbeat we hear is alive is simply a matter of science,” Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said in announcing the beginning of the ad campaign.  ”We believe that it is vital that America’s pro-life community make it clear that they will reserve their votes for candidates of either party who are committed to protecting life from conception to natural death.”

Anyone can listen to or download the ad from the Knights of Columbus website, www.kofc.org.

A similar ad is planned for broadcast in Canada, where general elections are set for October 14, 2008.

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest lay Catholic organization, with more than 1.75 million members in North and Central America, Asia and Europe.  Last year, Knights donated $145 million and more than 68 million hours of volunteer time to charitable causes.

America’s Catholic Bishops and other Leaders actively entered the public fray, initiated by Senator Joseph Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in setting the record straight on true Catholic teaching, especially with respect for life. Supreme Knight Carl Anderson made public his letter to Senator Joseph Biden. Read the entire letter here: http://www.catholic.org/national/national_story.php?id=29498

Blue Star Mothers

With son in Iraq, Sept. 11 means a little more

CALEDONIA — It’s an anniversary that Diana Rettig would rather not have to remember.

She remembers how numb she felt the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.

At the time, Rettig had a five-year-old daughter in preschool and two sons, one in high school. She didn’t realize the kind of effect the date would have on her oldest son, Jacob.

Seven years later, Rettig, 45, who lives with her family in Caledonia, uses a Web camera to communicate with Jacob, now 22, in Iraq, where he is stationed with the United States Army.

As the nation remembers the tragic events of Sept. 11, mothers like Rettig are reminded of the sacrifices their sons and daughters make as they serve in places like Iraq.

Jacob, an Army pilot, is serving his first tour of duty in Iraq. He was too young to enlist on Sept. 11, 2001, but the events on that day compelled him to serve, like it did many others.

That’s what mothers like Rettig remember on this day, seven years after the terrorist attacks.

“It’s an anniversary of the freedom that he chose to defend. When your son or daughter goes into the military, no matter what branch, you go in as a family,” Rettig said. “They give up things that people take for granted. You’re proud because you have that freedom.”

More convention news:

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC–(Marketwire – Aug. 7, 2008) – Delegates to the annual international convention of the Knights of Columbus today adopted a resolution calling for “legal and constitutional protection… for the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others.” The convention is being held in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest organization of Catholic laymen. It was founded in 1882, and has more than 1.75 million members in North and Central America, Asia and Europe.

The resolution declares that “marriage is a natural institution based on ancient human values that have evolved over time into a unique and deeply rooted social, legal and religious institution,” and that it “reflects the natural biological complementarity between man and woman which predates the state and which is woven into the social and religious fabric of every major culture and society.”

Marriage between man and woman “provides the most favorable environment in which to protect the rights and the best interests of children,” the resolution stated.

Convention delegates adopted resolutions dealing with other public policy issues as well, including building a culture of life, religious liberty, the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, decency on the Internet and in the media, Catholic education, and the Pledge of Allegiance. ACLU Donates $1.2 Million to Anti-Marriage California Proposition 8
By Tim Waggoner

SACRAMENTO, September 8, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The American Civil Liberties Union, which has a long history of promoting the homosexual movement, has now taken up arms against the family by donating $1.2 to defeat Proposition 8, which, if passed in November, would reverse the California State Supreme Court’s May 15 ruling that gave homosexuals the right to “marry.”

Despite the fact that 61 percent of Californians voted in 2000 to define marriage as being between one man and one woman, this May the California Supreme Court overturned this decision, implementing homosexual “marriage” in the state.

Proposition 8 seeks to re-define marriage as the people of California defined it in 2000, but is facing strong opposition from the homosexual movement and radical organizations such as the ACLU.

The ACLU is well known for its support for causes which are repugnant even to many social moderates, such as its backing of a move to provide privacy to gay men wanting to have sex in public bathrooms.

ProtectMarriage.com, which is imploring Californians to protect traditional marriage by voting yes for Proposition 8, has issued a statement in response to the ACLU’s massive donation to the anti-family effort.

“By taking the ACLU’s support, our opponents are showing their true colors. The ACLU is notorious for undermining religious liberty, supporting the legalization of heroin and cocaine, and working to water down laws against sex offenders. And now, for being the #1 sponsor of a campaign to overturn the institution of marriage as it’s existed for thousands of years. ”

“To match them, we’re launching a new campaign to stop by ACLU by raising $1.2 million from dedicated supporters like you,” said the statement.

In related news, The Pacific Gas and Electric Co., whose mission over the last 150 years has focused on excellence in energy provision, also recently made a $250,000 donation aimed at knocking down proposition 8.
